Peter Shimamoto has more than thirty years of experience in complex commercial civil litigation, with a particular emphasis on entertainment and intellectual property matters. He has extensive experience in all aspects of civil litigation in federal court, state court, and arbitrations, from pre-filing through trial and appeal. He has obtained successful results for his clients through motion practice, at trial, on appeal, and through settlement.
After graduating from Harvard Law School, where he was an Editor on the Harvard Law Review, Mr. Shimamoto clerked for the Honorable Robert R. Merhige, Jr., in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He received a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, with High Honors, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Prior to attending U.C. Berkeley, Mr. Shimamoto was a student at the University of Southern California for two years, where he was a music major.
Mr. Shimamoto has worked in New York and Los Angeles, including at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Irell & Manella. He has litigated cases involving some of the nation’s leading artists, motion picture studios, television networks, television production companies, and music companies. He has handled numerous cases involving issues relating to profit participation, copyright infringement, trademark infringement, licensing and distribution, financing, breach of contract, trade secrets, defamation, fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and many other subjects. His clients have obtained more than $100 million in jury verdicts and settlements.
He is a member of the California and New York bars, and is admitted to practice in the United States District Courts for the Central, Northern, and Southern Districts of California, Southern District of New York, and the United States Court of Appeals, Third and Ninth Circuits.
He is also Vice President of the Board of Directors for East West Players, the nation’s premier Asian American theater organization, and a member of the Los Angeles Copyright Society, and the Copyright Society of the USA.
